Illinois is home to the largest population of wintering bald eagles in the United States, and January is the prime time to see them!
Bald eagles make their home near large bodies of open water with an abundant food supply and old growth trees. The Illinois River valley makes the perfect location for viewing our majestic state bird in its natural habitat!
In downtown Pekin, you can observe the eagles from your car, or walk along the bike path or out to the pier for a better look and photo opportunity. For a close up view of a live eagle, take in the free ‘Birds of Prey’ show at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 20th, at the Pekin Public Library. While in downtown Pekin, warm up with coffee from CJ’s Café, enjoy a hot meal from one of several locally owned eateries, indulge in homemade treats from Maurie’s Candy, a Pekin landmark, and shop at our quaint boutiques, antiques, and gift shops.
