After a few years absence, the City of Pekin is proud to announce the Pekin Farmers Market will be returning to historic downtown Pekin. Opening Day at the new location at 326 Court Street (the grassy lot next to Pekin Times) is scheduled for May 30, 2018. Visitors and residents can expect a wide selection of traditional fresh fruits and vegetables, flowers, and handmade goods available for purchase. The market will feature live music, food trucks, and a rotation of special guests each week throughout the summer every Wednesday from 11 AM – 2PM.
"This a wonderful way to bring the community together while showcasing downtown Pekin," said Pekin City Planner Katy Shackelford.
Courtney Psinas, the city's new Downtown Development Coordinator, has been tasked with organizing the market and other downtown events. Some of her assignments include recruiting and managing vendors, arranging entertainment, and attracting sponsors. Psinas said the idea is to provide variety. "We are curating our vendors to offer unique options that fit the needs of our shoppers," said Psinas, "and we're working with local artist and entertains to ensure each week is a new experience." The market has already announced the first vendors for the 2018 season will be Kira's Flowers and Downriver Farm, both located in East Peoria.
Pekin City Manager Tony Carson anticipates a very successful market season and an active downtown all summer long.
“We’re really excited," said Carson. "We think it’s going to be a good addition. We look at this as being a destination spot for Wednesdays. This will be an added attraction to downtown. The whole idea is to get people to come downtown."
